The Dream Book of Self-Knowledge

Track (train)

  • symbolizes duality that enters into the knowledge process as a braking element.
  • many tracks, a large station yard: many possible paths of future development; a time for decision-making.
  • branching off: the dreamer's life path will take a different direction than what he expected.
  • side track: the mere sight of these tracks indicates stagnation and other images around side tracks may tell us what the stagnation will concern.
  • steeply rising: expect a difficult period.
  • sharply descending: expect a dangerous period; it is important to approach problems very carefully.
  • tracks leading underground, tracks in a tunnel: path to the subconscious mind toward hitherto hidden facts; if, for instance, an opening gate, narrow spaces or water join this image, this is the dreamer's entrance to prenatal and birth experiences (see Basic Perinatal Matrix archetype).
  • ending tracks: the continuation of the self-improvement process (life path) will have to proceed on a new basis.
  • means of transportation moving along a single rail: dangerous one-sidedness.
  • tracks crossing: possible conflict of the fates of two people (single track) or multiple people (multi-track); the dreamer should take caution so that this conflict is not tragic.
  • a track across the water's surface: successful overcoming of emotional dependencies; the culmination of this image should be a track leading through a landscape of ice and snow.
  • an object or obstacle on the tracks: a threat, the nature of which is depicted by the symbol of the obstacle; it is usually apparent from the dream itself how we can eliminate the obstacle.
  • a stone or rock on the tracks: informs the dreamer of the need in the upcoming period to attempt to remove obstacles on the life journey, obstacles that the dreamer himself once created through his own acts; see Stone or see Rock.
  • black goats on the tracks: for single people a warning against an intended marriage; for married people a warning that a negative aspect of marital life will soon appear.
  • house or building on the tracks: the construction of the dreamer's individuality was recently made on a completely unsuitable foundation since it prevents continuation in the commenced life journey; it will be easier to destroy the house and build it somewhere else (create a new individuality) than to rebuild the train tracks (life journey).
  • a rail vehicle continuing on, even without tracks: this is more a representation of strong will than of external conditions enabling the dreamer to proceed in his life journey.
  • repair of tracks: a minor correction on the life path.
  • construction and laying of tracks: construction of life path.
  • the track(s) number can also contribute to explaining the dream – see Number.
  • miraculously appearing tracks, tracks transformed from a different symbol: represent a unique chance that the dreamer should take advantage of.
  • ruts from road vehicles (usually in mud or sand): traces of the dreamer's past acts.
