The Dream Book of Self-Knowledge

Subway

  • symbolizes the dreamer's ability to move through the subconscious mind.
  • entrance or doors to the metro: separates the waking consciousness from the unconscious; a person passes through this door to the process of recognizing his negative aspects (like Goethe's Faust who recognized Mephistopheles); a frequent image of the Hero and Shadow archetypes.
  • if the image of the subway is accompanied by e.g. an opening gates, narrow spaces or water, then this is the dreamer's entrance to prenatal and birth experiences; blocked subway spaces symbolizing biological waste in the birth canal are among similar experiences (see the Basic Perinatal Matrix archetype).
