The Dream Book of Self-Knowledge

Eyes

  • of people: symbolize the content of the mind and therefore we can see in them the image of the soul and recognize dependencies or the pristine purity of emotional or spiritual personifications.
  • of animals: have the same meaning as human eyes, but with the difference that they relate exclusively to instincts and instinctual personifications.
  • color of eyes: see Color.
  • many eyes follow the dreamer: this image expresses the dreamer's pretentious attempt to appear important in the eyes of others.
  • a one-eyed person or giant: symbolizes a narrow view of the world and a focus in only a single direction, which, though it can lead to excellent results in a certain field, can also result in a fall to the lower levels of living; (the similarity with the mythological story of Odysseus on the island of Cyclops is no coincidence).
  • something falls in the dreamer's eye: loss of purity and virginity; often the result of a sexual transgression.
  • ill eyes: encourage the dreamer to provide more emotional experiences to his eyes.
  • loss of vision (seen in others or experienced): the unconscious is emphatically warning the dreamer of a current inability to see the impact of his own egotistical behavior in the material and emotional world; a radical change in thinking, feeling and acting is needed to rectify this.
  • regaining sight: the dreamer took the warning from the unconscious seriously and fundamentally changed his mindset to his benefit.
  • painting one's face, beautifying oneself, (the dreamer does it or sees others doing it): see Makeup, putting on makeup.
  • closing, closed eyes: an unwillingness to look at the real world and emotional relationships; if the dreamer is in danger, closed eyes show his lack of courage; in meditation or when trying to focus on inner realities, closing one's eyes is a positive act that helps eliminate from the mind objects of the material world.
  • the dreamer is able to do something with closed eyes: this image is synonymous with a familiar path.
  • twisting eyes: if the dreamer sees this image on others, then the unconscious is warning him of emotional outbursts; if the dreamer himself turns his eyes, then he is experiencing rage from his own helplessness.
  • bloodshot eyes: rage, uncontrolled emotions.
  • blinded by brightness, a light: the dreamer is still unable to recognize spiritual realities.
  • beautiful and captivating: the interpretation depends on to whom the eyes belong; in the best case we can be enchanted by spiritual personifications, usually by emotional personifications, in the worst case by instinctual personifications; the traits that we can read from eyes in dreams can tell us a lot.
  • strange, unusual (usually with aliens): the dreamer sees the world and the relationships in it differently than the individual to whom the eyes belong (the unconscious can thus show the dreamer e.g. the difference between his understanding of reality and spiritual insight).
  • fish eyes: symbolize constant attention (fish never have closed eyes) and the spiritual hope flowing from them.
  • open underwater: express the dreamer's ability not only to suspect, but also to see and recognize emotional relationships.
  • blindfolded (e.g. when playing blind man's bluff): only emotional anima or emotional animus can be blindfolded in its decision-making since it is controlled by the heart and does not need sensory vision for the right decision.
  • four eyes on two faces of one head: a momentous dream in life that symbolizes the mythological depiction of antitheses*91.
  • eyes can sometimes be a representation of a vision of the world in the idea of the mandala (see Mandala).
