The Dream Book of Self-Knowledge

Sun

  • the ruler of the emotional animus and expresses the active male principle (applies for both men and women).
  • accompanies the Numinosum archetype; see Map of the unconscious.
  • also has its numerical accompaniment which is understandably number 1 (see Number).
  • behind the clouds: a temporarily hindered approach to the male component of the psyche.
  • landscape flooded with sunlight: the instinctual essence of the land and everything arising from it is illuminated with the emotional aspect of the male nature.
  • warming oneself in the sun: receiving emotion from the supreme source.
  • clouds with the sun: strengthening influence of the male emotional component of the soul (animus).
  • sunny weather: exposes the dreamer to the full effect of the male emotional component of the soul (emotional animus) and enables him to accept emotions from the highest source, and therefore nakedness is the best for sunny weather since the sun's rays are not subdued or shaded by the robe of personality.
  • sunrise: new beginnings, awareness of the eternal cycle of life.
  • sunset with twilight: ending of a certain process or relationship; on rare occasions even the foretelling of the death of a person with whom the dreamer observes the evening twilight.
  • dusk after the sunset: characterizes the soul in which less light corresponds to less emotional and spiritual content in the mind; conversely, the transition from day to night symbolizes an awakening of the emotional or spiritual component of the psyche.
  • fixed in the same place in the sky: the halted process of understanding the emotional animus can be the result of an overly elevated masculinity and the ensuing imbalance between the male and female component of the soul.
  • in unnatural movement (usually extremely fast movement): depicts rapid development in understanding the male element leading to unity with the female antithesis, which causes in the unconscious and in dreams phenomena linked to an unnatural movement of the sun (emotional animus).
  • change or orbit or does not set or rise at a certain time: this foretells of a significant change in the dreamer's psyche that is part of the healing process on the path of self-knowledge; next the sun will rise in the west and set in the east.
  • rising in the west and setting in the east: depicts rapid development in understanding the male element leading to unity with the female antithesis causes in the unconscious and in dreams phenomena linked to an unnatural movement of the sun (emotional animus); see Anima – Animus and Coniunctio archetypes for more on this complex theme.
  • observable changes on the Sun's surface (e.g. eruptions of solar matter, sun spots): a dramatic development in understanding the male emotional component (emotional animus); the consequence of this change for the female emotional component will soon inevitably appear in dreams and the dreamer will become a witness of the geologically active surface of the Moon.
  • exploring the Sun: the dreamer is actively trying to reveal the secrets of the emotional animus and its influence on his life.
  • in addition to inner processes of the human psyche it can also show expected planetary development in dramatic visions: see Past and Future Visions archetype.
  • a golden sun (emotional animus) and silver moon (emotional anima) in union: the unification of antitheses and a frequent image of savants in alchemy.
  • according to alchemy, it has its "earthly representative" – which is sulfur (just as mercury represents the Moon): the two elements, like both celestial bodies, are antitheses of the male and female principle (see Alchemist archetype).
  • our sun in the first phase of spiritual development: considered the emotional animus; the development of emotional components of the male part of the psyche (changes in the sun's colors) takes place on the Sun's surface.
  • a second sun is a symbol of the clash of emotional and spiritual components; the color of the sun tells of the results of transformed emotions (if the color is green, the dreamer is heading toward the realm of the Spirit).
  • a red giant (can be another sun): symbolizes the rebirth of emotional awareness into spiritual awareness; the color reflects the nature of the transformed emotions and feelings.
  • a white dwarf star (usually a third sun): pure essence of spiritual consciousness.
  • solar eclipse: the dreamer has a unique chance to know a rare psychic state in which the male component of the psyche is momentarily completely suppressed (during a full eclipse); and only the negative female part of the psyche (dark moon) completely affects it; shortly after, the male component of the psyche regains its predominance over the negative female part of the psyche; it can also foretell of a very serious event in the world.
  • absorption of the moon and sun in a single image: the final unification of antitheses.
