*46 The Golem, in Hebrew formless mass, rudiment, unfinished thing; from the 12th century it denotes an artificial human being brought to life through magical rituals. These rituals included the insertion of a shem with the secret inscription "shem HaMephorash (in Judaism the name of God) to the place between the eyes, which revived the Golem. Legends of the Golem have evolved since the 15th century. The most famous legend about the creation of the Golem involves the Rabbi Loew of Prague.
