*87 Jesus' encounter with the devil

*87 Jesus' encounter with the devil. Jesus refused in the desert the devil's offer of all kingdoms of the world, since, aware of his power over his instinctual nature, he did not allow himself to be tempted by all the treasures of the world. Power over oneself is above all kingdoms and above all treasures of the world. In response to the devil's enticing words in the desert: "All this power will I give thee and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it: If though therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine."  Jesus responded:  "It is written: Though shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve." (Luke 4:6-7) In this way Jesus showed the people the path to power over themselves, the path out of the grasp of the material world. Anyone who grasps this deep truth cannot be tempted by treasures, supposed power over other and will take the path of Christ and many other awakened individuals of the human world to freedom and independence.
