The Dream Book of Self-Knowledge

Valley

  • especially as an antithesis to mountains: the earth's surface is in the unconscious an image of the spiritual journey in which valleys (lowlands) are full of vegetation, an enormous number of animals (instincts) and rich relations to nature and to people (emotions); yet as the altitude increases, the diversity and amount of flora and fauna decrease so that in the great mountains all instinctual forces (animals, plants) and emotions (relations) lose their power over the dreamer and only snow and ice (spiritual principles) reign.
  • together with mountains: antitheses that should be unified at a certain stage of spiritual development.
  • life is a constantly changing continuum and human life is symbolized in the unconscious by the journey from the valley to the highlands, mountainous areas and plateaus to the highest mountain tops; yet even this is not the final destination since knowledge leads the enlightened person with a transformed consciousness back to the valley, back to the land of emotions and instincts.
